Letter Study
Learning the letters of the alphabet and their corresponding sounds is a very important skill in Kindergarten. Every week we concentrate on a particular letter: examining how it is formed, listening to its sound(s), and brainstorming words that begin or contain that letter. We also sing song to help the students make the connections between the letters and the sounds they make. Please continue to send in pictures or items for the letter we are concentrating on.
Popcorn Words
We have begun introducing popcorn words. These are high frequency words that "pop up" in almost everything we read. The goal is to be able to automatically recognize and read these words without "sounding out". We do many activities and games with these words. One example is using the poem of the week and looking for a few words and using a yellow marker to put some butter on the popcorn words.

The Question of the Day
(Every morning when the students enter the classroom, they are asked to complete a question of the day. They do this by simply moving their name card to the appropriate spot. This simple activity serves many purposes: the students learn to recognize their name and the names of their friends, they begin to read simple sentences, we count and compare the results, and sometimes we then brainstorm a list of words related to the question (which helps the students develop early reading and writing skills). As the year progresses, the questions will become more complex (with multiple answers possible), and we will begin to share the pen so that the students can write their ideas and thoughts.

Poem of the Week
Every week we introduce a new poem. Sometimes the poem is related to the season or a holiday, sometimes its a topic that the students are interested in or are talking about. We begin by simply reading the poem a few times. As the week progresses, we have read the poem many times. We pick apart the poem by finding and circling high frequency (popcorn) words, repeating words, letters, rhyming words etc. When your child comes home with the poem in their Poem Book, feel free to do the same thing, or change it up and do something new! The point is... repetition is great for young beginning readers because it builds confidence. As the year progresses, go back and read old poems, add new lines to poems- anything you want- just have fun!!! If you have a poem that your child enjoys, send in a copy so we can share it with all the Kindergarten friends!
