Currently we are learning about syllabification, counting numbers of words in sentences, identifying punctuation marks and rhyming. We are always looking for popcorn words in our morning message and, during read alouds, working on making predictions, connections and re-telling stories in our own words. Students have been doing very well with their take home reading program. Many students have made gains since September in their ability to sound out words and to use picture clues to help them decipher words. Their confidence is growing and they are developing, what we hope, will be a lifelong love of reading! In Math we are working on measuring using standard and non-standard units of measurement. We have discussed concepts of short/long, heavy/light, empty/full, length, weight, capacity. We will soon be learning about Canadian coins and students will have ample opportunities to explore them through dramatic play. In Science we are learning about parts of plants and flowers and life cycles. We have praying mantises and tadpoles in our classrooms and are excited to see how they grow and change!
Recently we enjoyed a wonderful trip to the Natural Pathways Forest School. Miss Clark and Mrs. Nicholson's class had a lot of rain on their day, Ms. Waites and Mrs. Beneteau's class had quite a few ticks! Despite it all, the students enjoyed their day of outdoor exploration and forest fun. Thank you to the parents who came with us; we hope you enjoyed your time spent in nature as much as we did!
Spring (summer!) weather is now upon us. Please make sure to send your child to school with a sunhat, sunglasses and sunscreen if you feel it necessary. Shade is limited on our playground and we spend quite a bit of time outside. Sun safety is extremely important. Please also make sure your child has an appropriate change of clothing in their cubby (shorts, t-shirt, etc). Closed toed shoes are a must for gym class and are most suitable for outdoor play. Extra drinks might be considered in lunches as well to facilitate hydration throughout the day.
Important dates:
Monday, May 22 - Victoria Day (no school)
Wednesday, May 24 - Pronger Track & Field Meet at Essex District High School (grades 3-8 track team members)
Thursday, May 25 - Welcome to Kindergarten! We welcome 2017-2018 kindergarten registrants and their families to come by for a visit! The event will be help from 5-6pm.
Thursday, June 1 - Concert on the Lawn. Come by after school for a bbq, frozen yogurt and music in the school yard. Kinder kids will be performing! More information to follow.
Friday June 9 - P.A. Day
Tuesday, June 13 - Field trip to the splash pad/park/pavilion in Amherstburg! More information to follow.

We would like to welcome Miss Clark to our Early Years Team, who is in for Mrs. Gibel until the end of the school year. She just recently finished a placement in Early Years and brings with her an enthusiastic approach to teaching. She has a Twitter account @_MissClark so feel free to follow her for classroom happenings! In Ms. Waites and Mrs. Beneteau's room we are welcoming Miss Robinet, a student from St. Clair College, and Miss Smallhorn, a student ECE. They will be with us until the end of the month and have been a wonderful addition to our room.
Thank you for your support of our Light It Up Blue day. It was great to see so many children wearing blue! If you happen to be in the building, check out the puzzle pieces put together by the GAINS students on the wall at the front door. Children from grades K-8 worked on these pieces and it has created an impressive work of art!
The hygiene drive for the Ronald McDonald House comes to an end this Thursday, April 13th. Thank you for your contributions thus far. Keep them coming! We are requesting soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, baby wipes, deodorant, body wash, Q tips, etc.
Spring weather is finally here, and hopefully to stay! Please ensure that your child brings to school with them clothing suitable for the weather (rain boots, rain coat, perhaps even gloves, hat etc. for chilly mornings and unexpected cold fronts!). Please send in a spare set of clothing appropriate for the weather as well that your child can leave in their cubby (e.g. t-shirt and light weight pants or shorts). Rain boots may be kept at school. Please make sure your child has indoor running shoes here at all times so that they are able to partake in gym class.
Important Dates:
Thursday, April 13 - Hot dog day and the last day to donate to the hygiene drive in support of the Ronald McDonald house
Friday, April 14 - Good Friday (no school)
Monday, April 17 - Easter Monday (no school)
Thursday, April 20 - Subway Day

Tuesday, April 4 is Light It Up Blue day for Autism Awareness. Students are encouraged to wear as much blue as they possibly can. There will be a prize for the Anderdon student who is dressed in the most blue. At our assembly on Tuesday there was a short video that explained how a student with autism might respond to others in social situations. Please continue these conversations at home regarding differences and promote acceptance of those differences.
Two grade 8 leadership students have organized a hygiene drive to benefit families who use the services of Ronald McDonald homes. One of our families stayed at a Ronald McDonald home for several weeks while their child was recovering from surgery. These hygiene products are desperately needed in times of crisis and are not often thought about by families who have other things of more importance on their minds. We challenge our littlest Mustangs to bring in as many hygiene items as possible, such as: soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, baby wipes, deodorant, body wash, Q tips, etc. Sample size items from hotel stays are most welcome. The drive ends on Thursday, April 13th. The class with the most donations will receive a trophy and free recess.
Just a reminder that tomorrow, Friday, March 31st, is a PD day; there is no school for students. Easter weekend is fast approaching. Good Friday is on April 14th and Easter Monday is on April 17th. Enjoy the festivities and the long weekend!

On Wednesday Mrs. Gibel and Mrs. Nicholson's class celebrated Mrs. Gibel's retirement with an ice cream sundae party. It was enjoyed by all. Once again, I, Mrs. Gibel, would like to thank you for your ongoing support and generosity this year. It has been a pleasure working with your little one and getting to know your family. The progress each child has made makes me very excited for their future. The new teacher that comes in will be very fortunate to work with our Kindergarten students and Mrs. Nicholson. I am very confident that their learning will continue to grow with Mrs. Nicholson by their side. I wish all families the very best throughout the course of the school year and beyond! I will miss each and every one of my students who have brought me much joy and laughter this year. Let's hope our paths will cross again. Thank you.
Important Dates
Thursday, March 30 - Mrs. Gibel's last day! And hot dog day.
Friday, March 31 - PD Day (no school)

In Math we are providing many opportunities for children to measure, using standard and non-standard forms of measurement. At home, measure anything and everything! Get out those rulers, measuring tapes, toothpicks, spoons, blocks, etc. to practice measuring. In Language we continue to identify popcorn words, beginning, middle and ending sounds as well as counting letters in words, counting words in sentences, numbers of syllables ("parts" of words), segmenting words (e.g. dog: d - o - g). Continue to encourage your child to make predictions and connections while reading at home and to retell stories you've read. In Science, corresponding to our Boomerang Lunch Program, we will be practicing the 3 R's (reduce, reuse, recycle) on a regular basis. Your support of this initiative is greatly appreciated. Keep those litter free lunches coming! Spring will lend itself to many nature walks to look for signs of Spring, animal habitats and behaviours and changes that Spring brings to humans in terms of clothing, activities, etc.
Please continue to dress your child for the weather. Rain boots, rain coats, etc. are necessary for outdoor adventures.
Stay tuned for information on upcoming field trips!

March quickly snuck up on us! Before we know it March Break will be here! Please be sure that your child has a hat, scarf, mittens/gloves, winter boots, etc. as the weather has been so unpredictable. As always, please try to label each article of clothing. Our lost and found is growing. Let us know if you are missing anything and encourage your child to take a look as well.
In Math we will continue to explore concepts of Number Sense and Numeration, Data Management and Probability as well as Measurement. In Literacy we will continue to read stories aloud, focusing on making connections and predictions, as well as recognizing and printing "popcorn" words. We continue to journal write regularly and are encouraging children to make their own books, cards, lists, etc. At home, practice letter naming and letter sound recognition skills to prepare them for independent writing. We will also be focusing on rhyming words. Ask your child to share some of the rhyming words he/she has learned at school and challenge them to come up with rhyming words on their own. We continuously provide opportunities for your child to develop independence in self help skills, such as dressing themselves, toileting, organizing their belongings, etc. Many students have been inducted into "the zipper club" in the classroom as they are able to independently perform this task. We always tell the students, "practice makes better!"
Thank you so much for returning your child's acts of kindness hearts. We acknowledged and discussed the importance of treating others in a kind, fair manner. In keeping with our "Pink Shirt/Anti-Bullying/Heal the World Day," we would like to thank you also for your overwhelming generosity in supporting Paige G., former Mustang, and her family during this challenging time.
Our blog is updated regularly. Please check in frequently as important dates and activities are added for your information. As always, please do not hesitate to contact us if you have concerns, questions or ideas you would like to share. Please send a note in your child's note tote or feel free to contact us as the school at 519-736-2592. We appreciate your partnership in education and the time you spend supporting your child and Early Years staff. Parents and teachers working together to promote learning results in success!

Thanks so much for your generous book donations. The books were picked up today to be delivered to Zambia for orphans there to enjoy!
Through the month of February we are acknowledging acts of kindness. We discuss acceptance, tolerance and appropriate problem solving strategies daily. These skills are so important to future success in school, life and in forming friendships. We have sent home 4 hearts for you to recognize your child's ability to use good manners, give support to younger siblings, to help tidy up his/her toys, etc. Please feel free to complete them and return them back to school so your child can share their good deeds. Children are very proud and excited to share their accomplishments with peers and teachers.
Term 3 is now underway. We will continue to focus on letter and letter sound recognition skills, identifying popcorn words and retelling, predicting and making connections to stories. Please consistently read to your child and be sure to return their reading folder on a regular basis to reinforce concepts we are teaching at school and to encourage a love of reading and learning. In math students are learning about graphing, estimating and probability. Encourage your child to use mathematical terms in every day situations (e.g., when grocery shopping, when eating meals, when folding laundry). It is important for children to have authentic experiences to allow them to connect their learning at school to the real world.
We have a couple field trips in the works. More information will soon follow in March.

KW Crew at John R. Park Homestead!
KW Crew at John R. Park Homestead!
Friday, December 16
Thank you so much to our parents who attended our field trip to John R. Park Homestead yesterday. Despite the cold, the children enjoying learning about winter and Christmas traditions of the past. They had the opportunity to bake cookies and pop popcorn over an open hearth, played with wooden toys from long ago, toured the barn and learned about travel by sleigh in the 1800s as well as learned about how the Park family decorated their homestead with items found on their property, such as berries, pine cones, osage oranges and evergreen branches.
The upcoming week is going to be full excitement and fun! We are looking forward to a talent show assembly on Tuesday, a student of the month assembly on Thursday and Spirit/pajama day on Friday! Please wear your warmest pajamas on Friday! The windchill has been preventing us from playing outside in the last couple of days. Children must come prepared for the weather in case we do get outside. Please make sure to send them with hats, winter coat, winter boots, scarves, snow pants and even an extra sweater for the classroom. Extra socks and gloves are suggested as well; children love building snow forts and snowmen out on the playground and clothing does not always dry in between nutrition/fitness breaks.
Mrs. Gibel and Mrs. Nicholson's class will enjoy a pizza party on Wednesday, December 21st for winning the Zumbathon Fundraiser. Each child will receive 2 pieces of pizza. Please pack snacks and a drink for first nutrition break.
Thank you so much for your generous donations to our canned food drive. We know these food items will be very appreciated by those in need this holiday season.
Thank you for sharing your family's special celebrations and traditions with our school family. The children loved sharing with their teachers and friends and their classmates enjoyed learning about not only our similarities but our differences as well. If you visit the school, please see all of the traditions posted outside of Ms. Waites and Mrs. Beneteau's classroom. We would like to wish all of our families a happy and healthy holiday season. We thank you for your continued support and contributions to your child's learning and to our school community. We look forward to learning together in 2017!

Kindergarten Fun!
John. R. Park Trip
Tuesday, December 6th, 2016
Please return all field trip consents by Friday, December 9th. Parents will be contacted if they are needed to accompany us to John R. Park Homestead. Due to limited space we need only a few volunteers this time around. There will be more opportunities throughout the remainder of the school year for those have not yet joined us.
Volunteers are a very vital and important part of our kindergarten program. If you would like to volunteer, please send a note to your child's teacher with your availabillity.
We have really enjoyed learning about your families traditions and celebrations. From holiday traditions to annual vacations, special family recipes and unique week-end traditions. This has provided a great opportunity for students to share about their life at home and help us learn a little bit more about each other. If you happen to visit the school, the traditions are posted on the bulletin board outside of Mrs. Waites and Mrs. Beneteaus class. In the new year, we will create a book for each class that will be sent home for your reading pleasure.
Our can food drive will be wrapped up on Friday, December 16th. We appreciate the donations we have received thus far. Thanks for supporting this worthy cause.

Some additional information about our upcoming field trip! During our visit to the Homestead students will be encouraged to compare winter traditions and celebrations of the 1840's h today's holidays and winter activities. The house there will be decorated with natural plant materials such as berries and dried flowers. Popcorn and gingerbread cookies will be made on the fireplace and traditional ornaments will be made to take home. Students will also learn about winter travel with the sleigh. We have been advised to dress warmly with coats, hats, scarves and mitts and to wear boots as there is often a cold wind off of Lake Erie and early settler homes are minimally heated. We are looking very forward to this special visit to the Homestead! A permission form will be sent home shortly, be sure to check your child's note tote for this! Just to remind you, space is limited in the Homestead. Very few volunteers will be needed to supervise and siblings are not able to attend this trip.
Thank you to those of you who have sent back the traditions and celebrations form for your child to share. The students have really enjoyed hearing about your family's special celebrations and we look forward to being able to share some more!
In Ms. Waites, Mrs. Beneteau and Mrs. Goggin's class we thank you for sending in your "bucket filler" worksheets completed at home. In both our class, and in Mrs. Gibel and Mrs. Nicholson's class, we are continuing to encourage and acknowledge "bucket filling behaviours". Keep up the good work at home and at school, boys and girls!
Winter weather is arriving! Please make sure your child comes to school with a hat, mittens or gloves, a scarf, a winter coat and boots. A pair of indoor shoes should be kept at school so that students are able to change into clean, dry footwear to wear in the classroom and participate in gym class. Please be sure that you label all items with permanent markers or labels so that we can keep track of each students clothing.
The canned food drive is now in full swing. Donations will be accepted until December 16th. We will use the cans, boxes, jars to count, sort, graph and discuss shapes. Thank you for your contribution to this worthy cause. We are happy to have the opportunity to teach our students the importance of sharing and caring for those who are less fortunate.

Operation Shoe Box was an overwhelming success in Kindergarten. Thank you so much for your generous support. We sent 117 boxes from all 4 kindergarten classes to South America and Ukraine. Thank you for helping us teach the children about helping others in need. The children were very excited to help fill the boxes with toys, hygiene products, craft supplies, dresses, slippers. We couldn't have done it without you, much appreciated!
Can Food Drive
The students at Anderdon will be collecting canned and non-perishable food items for our local food bank. Operation Shoe Box afforded the opportunity to help our global community; the can drive will help the less fortunate in our community. Thanks in advance for your participation.
Congratulations to Mrs. Gibel's and Mrs. Nicholson's kindergarten class for winning 3rd place in the Zumbathon fundraiser! Congratulations to Ainsley for finishing 3rd place overall in the amount of money raised school wide. They will enjoy a pizza party in the near future, date to be announced.
John R. Park Homestead
Our classes will be visiting the homestead on Thursday, December 15th. We will leave the school at approximately 9:15am and return around 12pm. Due to the very limited space inside the homestead very few volunteers are required. Your child's teacher will contact you if your supervision is needed. The program at the homestead is about traditions and celebrations that would've taken place in this area in the late 1800's. They will enjoy baking cookies over an open hearth, popping popcorn, visiting the barn and viewing a puppet show about the Park family.
Celebrations and Traditions in Kindergarten
In the coming weeks we are going to be learning about celebrations and traditions around the world. We would love to learn about your family’s special traditions and celebrations. These can be traditions regarding family outings, birthday celebrations, special recipes, holidays at any time of the year. For example, March break vacations, cutting down the Christmas tree, family barbecues. We would like our students to learn about diversity, first in our local community and in our global community. We will explore holidays such as Chinese New Year, Hanukkah, Kwanza and Christmas. Please see the note that will soon be sent home and will enable your child to share your family's special times together. We look forward to learning about each family’s unique celebrations and traditions. Parents will be welcomed into our classrooms to assist their child in sharing their stories and memories or to bake or demonstrate making a special food item or craft. Please let us know if you are interested in coming in in December to share this special time in kindergarten.
In our learning we are exploring 2-D shapes in the classroom setting as well as around the school and outdoors. We use every opportunity possible to practice counting. At home, count the number of items needed to set the table for your family, the number of cans you bring home after groceries, etc. We have been talking about changes in the weather, animal behavior and habitats as well as the effect of weather changes on animals and humans. We are excited to visit Mustang Woods to apply our learning in a natural setting. The path has been cleared and is ready for students to participate in outdoor education and exploration. In Language we are continuing to read stories on a daily basis, working on making predictions and personal connections. We are always looking at letter names and letter sounds and we are beginning to learn high frequency ("popcorn") words. For you holiday shoppers, magnetic or sponge letters and/or numbers are great facilitators to encourage play and knowledge of concepts taught at school.

Thank you in advance for participating in and supporting Operation Shoebox. Donations can be sent in at any time so we can begin packing our boxes. The very latest date for contributions is Thursday, November 17th. We have just received information regarding items that should NOT be included in our donations. These are:
-food and candy
-toothpaste
-used items
-breakable items (glass, mirrors)
-decks of standard playing cards
-items that could leak, melt or freeze (shampoo, creams, lip balms)
-items that could scare or harm a child (knives, war related toys, toy guns)
Please return all Zumbathon forms on Monday, October 31st. We will enjoy a period of movement and dance during this time. It is also Orange and Black day on Monday.
Poem books will continue to be sent home once a week. A new poem is added each week or two for your reading pleasure! Please review the new poem as well as previous poems. Focus on concepts of print, such as reading from top to bottom, left to right, beginning/ending of the poem, punctuation marks, etc. Many of our poems are from our Jolly Phonics program, which is an excellent tool that assists in the learning of letter names and sounds. Ask your child to teach you the actions and sing the song for each letter!
In November we will be exploring the concept of peace and discuss the importance of peace in our daily lives at home and at school. This is a perfect time for us to review ways to solve conflict in appropriate ways. We will attend a Remembrance Day assembly on November 11th to honour all veterans of the past and present. We will read stories and learn poems and songs to help deepen our understanding and appreciation of Remembrance Day in Canada. We also look forward to a representative from Fighting Island visiting our classrooms and teaching us about the environment and species native to our area.
Stay tuned for information regarding our December field trip to John R. Park Homestead.

On this blog, you will find information regarding Ms. Waites, Mrs. Beneteau's and Miss Beetham's class as well Mrs. Gibel's class. The blog will be updated frequently. Please visit the blog often, and with your child, so they can share their experiences and learning with you. They absolutely love to see pictures of themselves and their friends in action!
In the coming weeks we will be sending home a reading folder and a poetry book. More specific information will be included with this take home reading program pertaining to strategies and when they should be returned to school. Research has proven time and time again that when parents and children read together on a daily basis academic and social growth increases. We encourage you to read with your child each and every day to foster a lifelong love of reading and learning.
Children will have the opportunity to attend the gym, music room and library. The schedule is still in progress. We will inform you once we have the final schedule. Our school follows a 5 day cycle. Please keep the School Year Calendar handy as it has the days of the cycle written for each day of the month (e.g. Thurs, Sept. 15 is Day 3).
A friendly reminder to please label everything you send to school with your children, including lunch containers, clothing, shoes, boots, etc. This will help us all keep organized!
